What Is the SUIP Status for Hernando, Pasco, and Citrus Counties?

These three counties make up the Nature Coast — our primary service area. As of September 5, 2026, only Pasco County has an open SUIP program. Here is the detailed status for each.

Hernando County ❌ Closed

Cap: $7,500 per home

Area: Weeki Wachee Springs Priority Focus Area (PFA) only

Capacity: 132 systems, first come first served

Administrator: Accenture in Tallahassee

Opened: March 11, 2026 at noon

Status: All grant funding has been expended. The county page states that if more funding is secured in the future, residents can check back on the page.

Is the Florida DEP State SUIP Portal Still Accepting Applications?

The state-level SUIP portal at floridadep.gov/SepticUpgrade redirects to a survey that returns: "This survey is not accepting additional responses at this time. Thank You!"

The DEP program page itself returns a 404 error. The state-level program is effectively shut down as of September 5, 2026.

What this means: You cannot apply through the state. You must go through your county directly. The state portal reopening would signal a new funding round — worth checking monthly.

What Does the SUIP Grant Actually Pay For?

SUIP pays for three qualifying nitrogen-reducing technologies only. It does not pay for a conventional drain field replacement.

How Does the SUIP Grant Money Flow? (6 Steps)

The SUIP grant follows a strict 6-step process. Skipping any step forfeits the grant. Here is the exact sequence:

  1. Check the map first. Eligibility is determined by BMAP/PFA boundary, not income. Your property must be inside the boundary. Check your county's eligibility map before anything else.
  2. Apply, naming your contractor. Your application must name a certified septic installer or licensed plumber. Nature Coast Drain Fields provides estimates at no cost — call (352) 269-9010.
  3. Wait for the purchase order. No reimbursement for work done before the PO is issued. The PO is issued within 30 days of application approval. Do not start work until you have it.
  4. Permit through the Department of Health. Your contractor handles DOH permitting. All installations must comply with Florida Administrative Code Chapter 62-6.
  5. Install and pass final inspection. Work must be completed within 30 days of the estimated installation date on your PO. DOH must issue final approval.
  6. Submit for reimbursement. Within 30 days of completion, submit invoices, permit fees, and payment request. The state framework pays the contractor directly. Some counties (e.g., Seminole) reimburse the homeowner instead.

Warning: Skipping any of these 6 steps forfeits the grant. The most common mistake is starting work before the purchase order is issued. Do not do this.

How Do I Apply for the SUIP Grant?

Pasco County (Currently Open — Only Open Nature Coast County)

  1. Confirm eligibility: Verify your property is in the Spring Hill area of Pasco County within the Weeki-Wachee BMAP area. Use the Pasco County SUIP page or the DEP mapping tool.
